Anyone who is a parent or who has cared for a baby knows that there is little truth to the expression “sleep like a baby.” Babies are notoriously awful sleepers, and even newborns, who may sleep for hours following the intensive act of being born, need to wake and feed around the clock. It follows that, for me, as a newborn photographer, newborn photo sessions are nothing less than a labor of love. I have easily spent 4+ hours at a session, in order to give my all to my youngest clients’ first portraits.
But it is all worth it in the end. Because then we arrive at images like this.
And this one:
The soft, diffused light shone so beautifully on this baby. My collection of soft bronze-browns and silver-greys matched his skin tone so perfectly.
I used to favor the sleeping baby shots over family portraits, but now it’s really hard for me to do a newborn session without including the parents — even if they’re not feeling up for having their photos taken. The memories of how small your little baby is in your arms are priceless. I wish for every parent to be able to have that in an image to cherish forever.
I always convert my favorite shots into black and white photos. The monochrome processing brings out the emotion in an image. I think it is perfect for this photo.
And this one too.
This tiny fresh baby and his parents welcomed me into their home for their first family shoot, which spanned about 3 1/2 hours, including set up and take down of my equipment. Though every baby is different, and some babies move through poses more quickly, this is how I know photographing newborns and the beginnings of new life is my passion. I’m happy to spend the time to capture this fleeting time for my clients.
